FRESH FLOWER CARE

How to Care for Your Flowers Before Preservation

3 KEY STEPS

HYDRATION, KEEP COOL AND STORE IN A DARK ROOM.

Your flowers have already carried so much meaning, love, remembrance, celebration, and emotion. With a little care during and after your event, you’ll give them the very best chance to be beautifully preserved for years to come.

🌿 Be Gentle

It may sound obvious, but flowers bruise very easy, especially after a long day of handling, photos, hugs and emotion.

Avoid squishing, crushing, or laying them flat.

If possible, assign your bouquet or arrangement to a trusted person (a bridesmaid, family member, or close friend) once you’re done holding them.

Let someone else “be the guardian” of them so you can stay present in the moment.

💧 Keep Them Hydrated

Fresh Water is essential to keeping your flowers fresh and supported.

Bouquet:

Place the stems in a vase or container with fresh water whenever they’re not being held. Ask your florist to include a sturdy vase that you can put on the bridal-table if possible.

Spray/Arrangment (foam or similar):

Remove the main flowers and foliage from the foam or base, trim their stem by 1-2cm and place them in a shallow container or vase of room temperature water.

Change the water daily.

Think of water as your flowers’ lifeline, it helps slow wilting and keeps petals plump and supported prior to preservation.

❄️ Keep Them Cool

Heat and light are the biggest enemies of fresh flowers.

Store your flowers in a cool, dark room, away from sunlight, heaters, or warm air

Less light = less opening and stress on the blooms

A fridge is absolutely fine if you have space (just avoid fruit and vegetables), but a cool room works perfectly too. DO NOT FREEZE.

CARING FOR YOUR FLOWERS BEFORE PRESERVATION

  • We strongly recommend you DO NOT Toss/Throw your bouquet that you are having preserved. Always take care when handling your flowers as they can bruise easily.

  • Keep your flowers in a vase of fresh water at any time possible. If you can, arrange for a small vase of water to be placed on the bridal table so when you are not holding your bouquet, you can place it in water.

  • After your event ensure to keep your flowers in a cool, dark room until you can get them into the post. The less light they have access to the less they will deteriorate.

  • Ask your florist for some spare packets of flower food to add to the vase water, Don’t forget how important it is to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet.

  • Remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacterial microbial growth that may limit water uptake by the flower.

  • Re-cut stems at an angle by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife or garden scissors.

  • Place the flowers in the vase solution you’ve prepared.

  • Refresh the water every couple days and follow/repeat the same procedure as described above.

What Not To Do

  • Do not put your flowers in the freezer. Flowers will have to be replaced if they have been frozen.

  • Do not use a substitute for flower food such as aspirin, soda, or a penny.

  • Never place your flowers with or near fresh fruit or cigarette smoke as both produce ethylene gas which will shorten flower life.

  • Don’t place flowers in direct sunlight or other sources of excessive heat.

  • Don’t use flower food in crystal or metal containers as the acid in the flower food will react with metal including the lead in crystal vases & bowls. Just use plain water in those cases.
